The horror!

Today will not be a Sunday Funday. Since today is Halloween I thought I'd present you with something truly horrifying. It is something so torturous that I have to rally all my strength just to post these images.

From the Twilight series {shiver} in Bella's bedroom - ORGEL table and ORGEL floor lamps.

And on the windows the now discontinued HULTET curtain.

So, I'm not a fan of the "saga" {gag}. Obviously. Vampires should be terrifying and not just creepy. I respect that books are selling and kids are reading. However, well I guess the Oatmeal explains it best :

Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!

Saturday Morning Cartoons

I thought you would enjoy a Saturday morning cartoon. It's the usual cheap shot at IKEA but we have a sense of humor.

Doctor Who - near future - part 2

Yesterday I started documenting the IKEA furniture in the Doctor Who series 2 episode Fear Her. I covered the bedroom and now the showroom continues with the living room.

KARLSTAD sofa and KARLSTAD chair

KLUBBO coffee table

LACK shelving unit with accessories in the office area.

I'm 80% sure the desk is a GALANT glass top but they don't show enough of it for me to be certain. This is the best shot I could get.

In front of the desk is an URBAN chair seen through the doorway from the kitchen to the office area. On the wall is a SPONTAN metal board.

The kitchen is a full IKEA kitchen but you know me. Can anyone give me the specific names?

So there it is. Usually I find one or two pieces when I'm spotting but rarely anything this extensive. I'm still waiting to catch Doctor Who using IKEA furniture in the very far future but they've been good so far. I'll keep looking.

Doctor Who - near future - part 1

If you thought Penny's apartment was a treasure trove of IKEA goodness than wait until you see the set for  Doctor Who, series 2 episode 11. The episode titled Fear Her, is set in 2012 London just prior to the Olympics. The furniture is so extensively IKEA that the episode could have been filmed in an actual showroom mock-up.

In her bedroom she has an EXPEDIT 4x4 bookcase with LEKMAN boxes and a 3 drawer birch Aneboda dresser (discontinued).

A MALM bed

What looks like a ALVINE FLORA pillow on the floor by the window. An EINA bedside table (discontinued) and an IKEA desk. The desk is discontinued and I can't find my notes on it, sorry. Although I couldn't get a good shot of them, even the curtains are hung with RIKTIG curtain rings.

Here is another shot of the EINA & desk.

Out in the hallway is a LACK side table. Briefly seen it the episode but clearly seen here in the behind the scenes special. The pendant hanging looks like it could be the MELODI.

We'll continue to look at the living room and kitchen tomorrow. Stay tuned.

A bonus shot showing a little TV magic:

It is indeed a set built from scratch so the production team specifically chose to furnish it with IKEA products.

What do you know

My first post featured the trailer for How Do You Know. What do you know...after watching it again I spotted the KULLA floor lamp in red.

I have a feeling this movie is going to reveal more IKEA items. I might have to see it in the theaters after all.

Insert JULES/Jewels pun here.

I'm seeing the JULES office chair pop up everywhere. A versatile office chair, the JULES comes in a half a dozen colors, swivel and stationary bases and adult and junior sizes. Can anyone testify to their comfort?

In the first season of NCIS McGee's desk chair was a black JULES. As I've previously noted he has a discontinued JERKER desk.

In season 1 of CHUCK the JULES was not the main break room chair at the Buy More. However, it was brought in for this episode where the staff of the Buy More wanted to play a trick on the new Ass. Man. (assistant Manager) Morgan.

A strong adhesive was applied to the chair to trap Morgan.

In season 4 of CHUCK the Buy More was rebuilt and they have a brand new break room. Completely outfitted with JULES chairs.

In the iCarly episode "iSell Penny Tees" the kids set up a workshop for their t-shirt production. Although not capped there are both swivel and stationary versions around the tables.

In the British drama Skins - (I'm trying to get my hands on these DVDs because IKEA is supposed to be used with some regularity.)

At $40 the JULES is affordable, especially if a TV production needs to buy in quantity. I wouldn't be surprised if I was able to make another compilation in the near future. Where have you spotted the JULES?

The sacrifices I make...

This post is made possible by this Facebook exchange:

Anna: Congrats Willow Smith for creating the most annoying song in the history of life... ever
Me: ARGH! I YouTubed it because I didn't know what you are talking about. First thing I see. IKEA. And yes, that song is obnoxious.

The song in question is Whip My Hair by Willow Smith. The nine year old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Looks like her dad, no?

She is a confident, talented girl but the song is very repetitive and reminds me that I am getting older. When capping it I had to play it back on mute.  I just...couldn't listen more than once. I am not the intended audience. If you want to watch it for yourself you can find it here. If you are not feeling brave I will provide you some highlights.

The IKEA stars of the video are HERMAN chairs and the INGO dining table.

The video production has taken full advantage of these products' ability to be easily painted.

Beautiful colors. Nice design. But, I hope to never have to hear that song again. Get off my lawn!

OK GO - White Knuckle

I realized I didn't give the "answers" for last week's Sunday Funday. How were you at spotting?

The items I spotted -

 LACK table

LACK shelving units

SKRUVSTA (more cute doggies)

EGIL stools

Good job boys! Take your bow.

Bonus points - did you spot the goat?

There is a nice article here about the record viewings and the planning that went into this video.

Sunday Funday - This too is awesome.

If you enjoyed last week's Sunday Funday then I have another one for you. This is also a video done by OK GO however this one upped the amazing factor by 1000. (I know last week I said 10 but after rewatching & capping I needed to revise my estimate.)

This video is for a song called This Too Shall Pass and its centerpiece is a Rube Goldberg Machine. Filmed in one continuous shot, it took them 60 takes (resetting the machine each time) and over two days to get a successful run. This article over at Wired give you more behind the scenes information. Mind Boggling

Why is this video so amazing? Not only is this an incredibly complex concept relying on exact precision for the machine to work and to be perfectly in sync with the song but there are IKEA gems incorporated into the layout.

See for yourself.

I know right? I've watched it numerous time, not just for spotting purposes but because there are so many little details. It boggles my mind thinking about how this was conceived and executed. So, what did you see?

Click for a larger image.

Items used in the machine - LILLABO train track, 2 EXPEDIT 2x4 bookcases, EVERT stools in yellow & orange, LACK side table (multiple colors), LACK coffee table, FROSTA stool, MARIUS stool, NOT floor lamp, SUNE stool and a ton of creativity. Did I miss anything?

Gone but not forgotten

I received a shock the other day. A part of our family was taken away from us without warning. I am saddened that such a versatile, adorable little guy who had so much potential is....gone. Let's take a moment to grieve for the Benjamin stool.

It is the circle of life. Old things must stagger off to die so new products can be made available to us. We like new stuff. Think of how excited you get when the new glossy catalog arrives with all the new glossy products. Something had to be sacrificed. It doesn't make it any easier. Loyal fans fly into a tizzy when something they love gets discontinued. Just ask Susan at IKEA FANS who posted about it a few months ago.

Allow me to take the opportunity to share with you some products that are gone from our shelves but not from our TV shows.

ENETRI - Grey's Anatomy - Chief's office

TRAKTOR - Doctor Who - Series 2 Episode 8

MIKAEL - NCIS - Season 2 Episode 21

MACKIS - The Big Bang Theory - Sheldon's room

MACKIS - iCarly - Shay's apartment

JERKER desk - NCIS - McGee's apartment

The JERKER desk has to be the #1 most lamented discontinued item of IKEA fans. It was replaced by the FREDRIK and for many it is not the same. What's the difference?

Through out various posts I have been ranking my personal list of most missed items. My number 1 is a tie. First, my local IKEA no longer offers the Lingonberry soda in the fountain drinks. So sad. I loved that tart yumminess. The other :

The FIRA mini-chest. The most hackable IKEA product ever. Yes, assembling could be a challenge with all the wee little nails and thin pieces of wood. However, these drawers had an infinite number of possibilities and was worth the difficulty. I am lucky enough to own four. The day I walked through the small storage section and didn't see my FIRAs I was saddened. I was sad enough when they discontinued the MACKIS and now we are left without wooden storage drawers of any kind.

So if you see something and think "Oh, I will get it next time" look for the bright yellow Last Chance sign because that is the only way IKEA notifies us that something will soon be no more. Sometimes, we don't even get the sign. If there is something you are looking for check Craigslist & the Swap/Exchange forum at IKEA Fans.

(Let me know if the formatting gets wonky. There is a lot going on in this post.)
